History of Cultus Lake

THE BEAUTIFUL LAKE

Cultus Lake: A Storied Past and Uncertain Future

Located in Stó:lō territory, Cultus Lake is a beloved recreational destination nestled in the Cascade Mountains. For over a century, it has drawn visitors and residents alike with its stunning natural beauty and diverse ecosystem.

Indigenous Roots and Early European Settlement:

  • Pre-Colonial Era: The Stó:lō people have a deep historical connection to the lake, using it for fishing, hunting, and gathering.
  • Early 20th Century: European settlers began to recognize the lake's potential for recreation, and logging operations started to impact the surrounding forests.

A Growing Community and Increased Development:

  • Mid-20th Century: The establishment of Cultus Lake Provincial Park and the development of recreational facilities, including campgrounds and boat launches, attracted more visitors.
  • Late 20th Century: The lake's popularity soared, leading to increased residential development and tourism.

Environmental Challenges:

  • Eutrophication: Nutrient pollution from human activities, such as wastewater and fertilizer runoff, has led to the degradation of water quality.
  • Invasive Species: The introduction of invasive species, like Eurasian Watermilfoil, threatens the lake's native ecosystem.

A Shared Future:To preserve the lake's health and beauty for future generations, the Cultus Lake Stewardship Society is working to address these challenges. By promoting sustainable practices, advocating for conservation measures, and fostering community engagement, we can ensure that Cultus Lake remains a cherished natural treasure.

    Additional Information

In October 2007, Dave Barnes phoned Marion Robinson to explore ways to help Cultus Lake. The first workshop was held with 32 people and their input was collated to form the Issues and Topics document of which subsequently the network of the Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewardship Strategy was formed.

The strategy is to build cooperation and coordination by bringing agencies and

individuals together. This requires a values-based approach that remains

inclusive, engaging and seeks rapport with all participants.
